Water, Water, Water!

We all take water for granted and we probably shouldn't!  And, if you are buying land in Costa Rica, whether a lot to build your home, or a larger plot of land for development, you should definitely consider water availability.  Costa Rica has been getting some press lately about water issues and it's supposed scarcity, particularly in coastal areas.  So before you close on your land, find out:

  1. What is the basic water supply to your land.
  2. If the water supply isn't there yet, when will it be and what type of supply--well, municipal water, private system, or something else.
  3. Even if you know you'll have municipal water, if you are living in a development and your town's water gets cut, is there a backup for the community.
  4. Is the water drinkable--in most places it should be!
  5. What other residential or commercial developments are in the area and what strain might they have on your land in the future.

Ask the seller/developer all of these questions and just to be sure, talk to others in the area about it.  It also wouldn't hurt to check directly with the local government.

Happy hunting!

Just Back from Another Informative Boomers Tour!

Sorry we have not updated this blog lately but we just finished another fun Boomers tour!  It's such a great time showing people the area we call home--the Central Valley of Costa Rica!  We get a kick out of people finding their dream property and connecting with the locals in some of these terrific smaller towns in the area.

Our next tour is scheduled for April 23rd-26th.  So check out our website and come and join us: Boomers Tours!

Introducing Three Springs at Magallanes, San Ramon

From my friends at CR Communities:

A new residential community five minutes from San Ramon, Costa Rica:

Three Springs at Magallanes

The sound of gently running springs. Wide expanses of barely touched land. Dramatic mountain ranges. Deep green rolling pastures. Incredible ocean views. Fascinating animals, plants and flowers. Ideal weather. Dazzling sunshine. Staggering sunsets. Near town but away from it all.

You can have all this, and more, at the Three Springs at Magallanes, a new, residential community located near San Ramon, and at a fraction of what you would pay for such incredible property in North America!

The Three Springs Magallanes, 20 acres formerly agricultural land with stunning views of the Nicoya Peninsula and the  Pacific Ocean, only 45 minutes to the airport, 35 minutes to the ocean, and five minutes to the bustling town of San Ramon, is the venue for this spectacular new residential community. Choose an award-winning architect who can give you several home ideas and designs and watch your meticulously constructed home be built to harmonize with nature, rather than impede upon it.

Three Springs at Magallanes is 24 home sites of 1 / 2 arce to 1.25 acres in a highly sought-after area of the Central Valley, most of which have Pacific Ocean and Nicoya Peninsula views. There is enough land for privacy but not more than you can manage. You will live among like-minded neighbors (“empty nesters,” retirees, professionals, former business people) who have also made the move from
North America to Costa Rica. Live in peace with safety, but not in a “cookie-cutter,” gated community. This is Three Springs at Magallanes.

News & Notes from Costa Rica

  1. Banco Nacional now accepts direct deposit of U.S. social security and pension checks.  To get your check directly deposited with Banco Nacional, you must open an account and fill out an authorization form.  For more information, call them at: (506) 212-2290 or (506) 212-2499.
  2. ICE to offer new & advanced cell phones and lines by April, 2008. ICE, the government run electric, telephone and Internet company, will offer advanced cell phones next year, with high speed Internet and email.
  3. Consumer confidence up 13.5%.  A new survey of Costa Ricans shows that they are satisified with the pace of the country's economy.
  4. High temps continue.  Costa Rica's northern Pacific coast and Central Valley continue to experience higher than normal dry season temperatures, largely attributed to  El Nino.  This has also resulted in heavy rains on the Caribbean coast.  Last months, temperatures were at a 10-year high in San Jose, hitting 28 degrees celsius.  This could result in a delay of the rainy season in the Central Valley according to local weather forecasters.

Food & Eating in Costa Rica

Believe it or not, I get quite a few emails from people asking about the food in Costa Rica--I suspect those emails are from people who have not been here yet.  The food is good if you know where to go but lets be honest, Costa Rican food is simple but hearty and it's certainly not like good French cuisine!  However, you can eat well here, and cheaply.  Here's a link to an article all about food and eating in Costa Rica: Costa Rican food!  Enjoy!

Crime in Costa Rica?

There was a recent report of a foreigner being assaulted while getting off a cruise ship in the Caribbean port City of Limon.  Yes, there is some crime here but it is no worse than anywhere else--and even better than many other places.  I've been in and out of Costa Rica for almost 20 years now and live here full time and have had no problems!  Just like anywhere else, just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine!

Finca Lilly for Sale

I don't know these people nor have I been to their property but from their website alone, it seems like a very nice property.  It is located in the San Carlos area and is over 317 acres for $385,000!  Here a link for those of you who want a BIG property: Finca Lilly!

If you do happen to go visit it (or even buy it), just let them know I mentioned it!  Thanks!

We still have a couple of spaces for Boomers' March 26 to 29th tour.  More information here: Boomers Relocation/Real Estate Tour!

New Article on Costa Rica!

I was fortunate to have the prominent overseas living site, Escape Artist, publish my article: "A Fresh Look at Costa Rica for Retirement".  I hope you will take a look and find the article to be helpful.

CR Communities intends to be the new standard for real estate in San Ramon

CR Communities, the latest entrant into the San Ramon area real estate development market, recently launched its website and has introduced its flagship residential development, "Three Springs at Magallanes", a stunning Pacific ocean view property less than five minutes from downtown San Ramon in Alajuela Province.  They property has 24 lots, each with a great deal of buildable space, most with ocean and mountain views, and few with mountain views (not so shabby though!).  Only 40 minutes to the airport, one hour to San Jose and 35 minutes to the Pacific coast, this is a gem of a property. Lots range in price from $30,000 to $75,000 depending on the views and lot size.

The company has put together an incredible team of award-winning architects, developers, engineers and site planners and intends to "raise the bar" for real estate development in the San Ramon area, as more and more baby boomers moving to the area expect a high quality development.
