Water, Water, Water!
We all take water for granted and we probably shouldn't! And, if you are buying land in Costa Rica, whether a lot to build your home, or a larger plot of land for development, you should definitely consider water availability. Costa Rica has been getting some press lately about water issues and it's supposed scarcity, particularly in coastal areas. So before you close on your land, find out:
- What is the basic water supply to your land.
- If the water supply isn't there yet, when will it be and what type of supply--well, municipal water, private system, or something else.
- Even if you know you'll have municipal water, if you are living in a development and your town's water gets cut, is there a backup for the community.
- Is the water drinkable--in most places it should be!
- What other residential or commercial developments are in the area and what strain might they have on your land in the future.
Ask the seller/developer all of these questions and just to be sure, talk to others in the area about it. It also wouldn't hurt to check directly with the local government.
Happy hunting!
